How to design your space for presence and restoration
Our nervous systems are constantly translating the world around us sound, scent, texture, light whether we’re aware of it or not. At North Star Essence, we design retreats and products to harness this truth, turning ordinary moments into anchors of calm. Sensory intention is simply the practice of choosing what you let in.
When we curate a retreat space whether at Villa Beji in Canggu or a converted villa in Tuscany we start by mapping the sensory journey from the moment a guest arrives. The scent of jasmine oil in the entryway, the texture of silk under the fingertips, the way natural light falls across a reading chair. Every sense becomes an invitation to soften.
You can bring this into your own home by curating four key elements:
Scent – Choose aromas that align with the mood you want. Morning clarity? Citrus or peppermint diffused in your workspace. Evening unwinding? Our jasmine oil on pulse points before you close your laptop. The brain stores scent memories in the limbic system the same place it stores emotion making fragrance a powerful mood cue.
Texture – At retreats, we layer spaces with tactile variety: silk-edged blankets for comfort, rattan chairs for grounding, handwoven mats for yoga. At home, replace one everyday item with a more intentional version, like a linen robe for mornings or a textured ceramic mug for tea.
Sound – Rainfall, soft chimes, or instrumental playlists can nudge your mind into a more relaxed state. At Bambu Indah in Ubud, the natural soundtrack of the Ayung River became a central part of the retreat experience.
Light – Swap harsh overhead lighting for soft pools of illumination. Candles in the evening, natural light during the day. Light regulates circadian rhythm more than any other sensory input.
The aim isn’t to overhaul your home overnight, it’s to create a few, carefully chosen sensory cues that turn your everyday into a sanctuary. When your senses are nurtured, your spirit follows, and even the simplest moments can feel like a retreat.
